Good to know about Henderson
- Water source and treatment plant. Henderson Water Utility's North Water Treatment Plant (510 North Water Street; system KY0510188) treats Ohio River surface water and serves the City of Henderson and portions of Henderson County. Source
- Lead and copper results. HWU's report for water treated in 2025 shows a lead 90th percentile of 4.29 ppb with 0 sites over the 15 ppb action level, and a copper 90th percentile of 0.0497 ppm (sampled August 2024). The report does not list a hardness figure. Source
- Galvanized water service lines. HWU found about 2,000 homes with galvanized steel water service lines, mostly in the East End (Atkinson to Green streets, Washington Street to Sand Lane); it will replace the public side from the main to the meter, and owners who want the private side replaced should call a plumber. HWU said it knows of no lead lines in the city (Nov. 2024). Source
- Sewer lateral responsibility. Under city ordinance cited in HWU policy F-400, property owners maintain the sewer lateral from the house to the main unless there is a cleanout at the property or easement line, and repairs must add a 6-inch cleanout where none (or only a 4-inch one) existed. Source
- Historic district (South Main and South Elm). The South Main and South Elm Streets Historic District, listed in the National Register, is the residential neighborhood along S. Main and S. Elm streets just south of Henderson's business district, with 127 contributing buildings dating from about 1820 to 1941. Source
- Historic district (Alves). The Alves Historic District, listed in the National Register, covers about 28 acres around Center, Washington, S. Adams, S. Alves and S. Alvasia streets with 95 contributing buildings from about 1865 to 1941. Source
- 2005 tornado. On Nov. 6, 2005, an F3 tornado touched down near Smith Mills in northwest Henderson County, destroyed a farm house, crossed the Ohio River three times and struck Ellis Park west of the U.S. 41 bridges on a 41-mile path that killed 25 people. Source
- 2009 ice storm. The Jan. 26-28, 2009 ice storm left at least one inch of ice across western Kentucky; NWS records that a Henderson County woman at home with no power and no heat died of hypothermia. Source
