Good to know about New Harmony

  • Water utility and source. New Harmony Water Utility (EPA system IN5265007), owned by the town, is a groundwater system drawing from three active wells and serving about 1,633 people through 620 service connections, according to EPA records. Source
  • Town-run gas, water and sewer. The Town of New Harmony runs its own municipal natural gas utility and its own water and sewer department (New Harmony Water Works); the town sewage treatment facility is off Tavern Street on the west side of town, and the town plan calls for a study of sewage plant upgrades and continued Lead and Copper Rule improvements.   • Electric provider. The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission's electric service territory map places New Harmony in Vectren Energy Delivery of Indiana's territory (now CenterPoint Energy); the town's comprehensive plan also names CenterPoint Energy as the electric provider. Source
  • Town permits and historic review. New Harmony issues its own property improvement permits through the town Zoning Administrator after review by the New Harmony Town Plan & Historic Preservation Commission; permits are needed for demolition, exterior alterations beyond paint color, new construction visible from public streets, and manufactured home work. The New Harmony Historic District (National Register boundary increase listed May 3, 2000) is roughly bounded by Third, Steammill, Main, Arthur and North Streets including Maple Hill Cemetery, with Greek Revival and Gothic Revival buildings and periods of significance running from 1800 to 1974.
