Good to know about Owensboro
- Water source: Ohio River alluvial aquifer. OMU's water comes from groundwater in the Ohio River Alluvium, a deep aquifer on the northeast side of Owensboro, pumped from 41 wells to the William R. Cavin Water Treatment Plant (system KY0300336); OMU reports zero water quality violations for 2025. Source
- Water hardness. OMU says its well water has 250-350 ppm hardness and that lime softening at the plant cuts this by almost half, to 150-200 ppm (mg/L), before filtering and adding fluoride and polyphosphate. The 2023-2025 reports do not repeat a hardness figure. Source
- Lead service lines. OMU says its review and a state-approved inventory found no lead service lines in its area, though some older connectors between mains and service lines are lead; phosphate treatment is used to limit corrosion. Its latest lead and copper testing (July 2023, 30 homes) had zero samples over the lead or copper action levels. Source
- Who fixes which water line. OMU owns the water line up to the meter; the line from the meter into the home and all pipes inside are the owner's responsibility, so leaks past the meter are a job for a plumber. Source
- Historic districts. Two Owensboro residential areas are on the National Register of Historic Places (NPS records dated March 28, 1986): the J. Z. Moore Historic District, roughly W. and E. 12th to 14th Streets between Daviess and Saint Ann, and Doctors' Row on W. Fourth Street between Frederica and Saint Ann. Source
- Downtown design review. Exterior rehabilitation, renovation, demolition and new construction in Owensboro's Downtown Overlay Districts (including the Historic Core and Neighborhood districts) need a Certificate of Appropriateness reviewed by the Downtown Design Administrator (270-215-2739). - April 2016 tornadoes. NWS confirmed two tornadoes near Owensboro on April 27, 2016: an EF-0 (80 mph) from south-southwest of the city to near the US 60/231 intersection that caused shingle and fascia damage and blew one home's front porch off, and an EF-1 (90 mph) east of the city that destroyed a mobile home and damaged about two dozen others. - January 2009 ice storm. The Jan. 26-28, 2009 ice storm, called the biggest disaster in modern Kentucky history by the governor, left about 1.5 inches of destructive ice from Paducah and Madisonville to Owensboro; outages lasted days in cities and weeks in rural areas, and several hundred people stayed at an Owensboro shelter.
